About Us
Dionne with Eduardo one of the boys she helped build a home for.
We are a small group making a huge difference
in the lives of children in Guatemala.
Our interest in Guatemala began with Dionne Robertson being chosen to participate in the Community Corps 2007 Habitat For Humanity Build in Guatemala for Gap Inc., she fell in love with the country and its people. Upon coming home and sharing her experience, Crystal Nuding and others were interested. One year later they returned, armed with family and a commitment to making a difference... Austin Friends of Guatemala began taking shape.
After meeting
Bonnie Dilger, Author and Coordinator of
Tree of Life: Mayan Branches for Education, there was no question of what needed to be done. One of the most pressing needs for the children of Guatemala is food. 2009 was the first year that free public education is available to all of the children. Even so, many of the poorest children must work to help support the family rather than go to school. Helping families with food items eases their burden and allows the children to attend school. Hunger is a major issue, as the children are eager to learn!
We recognize the importance of reaching out and lending a hand. Supporting the children in these small ways shows them compassion and helps lift a nation from it's core. We also know everyone won't or can't give, but some of you will resonate with our cause. Thank you for whatever you can do and certainly for your positive thoughts and energy if nothing else.
Pass it on... Thanks!
